  9.  AB    MR imaging is the ideal technique to display the soft-tissue
  10.        abnormalities produced by infectious processes. In general these
  11.        soft-tissue alterations consist of signal intensity changes that reflect
  12.        the increased water content of the soft tissues induced by the
  13.        inflammatory reactions. In some cases these changes are nonspecific, but
  14.        in others, MR imaging can be quite specific and helpful in detecting the
  15.        presence and extent of the infection, which generally is suspected
  16.        clinically on the basis of physical and laboratory findings. The MR
  17.        manifestations of soft-tissue infection, including septic arthritis,
  18.        tenosynovitis, bursitis, cellulitis, necrotizing fascitis, soft-tissue
  19.        abscess, infectious myositis, HIV-related infection, lymphadenitis and
  20.        lymphangitis, and a few unusual parasitic and fungal infections, are
  21.        reviewed.
